Xiaomi Vacuum Robot Gen 1 Repair (LIDAR Error 1)

One of the most common defects in the first-generation Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum is the notorious Error 1: the LIDAR tower stops spinning, the robot is unable to create a map and refuses to perform any cleaning. The cause is almost always a worn-out small motor or a broken drive belt – both of which can be obtained for under 10 euros. 30 minutes of work, a Phillips-head screwdriver, and the robot is up and running again.

The symptom: Error 1, nothing works anymore

The Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum (first generation) is a great robot vacuum – cheap, reliable, and easy to integrate into a smart home via Valetudo or Xiaomi Home. Until one day the notorious Error 1 shows up: the robot drives a few centimeters, stops, and announces a laser-sensor error by voice.

The orange LIDAR tower on top no longer spins. Without a rotating laser, the robot can't build a map – and refuses to clean.

The good news

The defect is mechanical, not electronic. A worn-out small motor or a snapped drive belt – both available for under 10 euros on eBay or AliExpress. The repair takes ~30 minutes with a Phillips screwdriver.

The cause

The LIDAR sensor is spun by a small DC motor via a drive belt (O-ring). After a few hundred operating hours, one of two things happens:

  • The carbon brushes in the motor are worn out – the motor no longer runs, or only jerkily.
  • The drive belt has snapped or stretched out – the motor spins, but the laser tower doesn't.

In both cases the firmware detects that no rotation is happening and throws Error 1.

Required materials

  • LIDAR motor (RF-500TB-14415 or compatible, fits Xiaomi Gen 1) – approx. 5–10 € on eBay/AliExpress
  • Replacement drive belt (O-ring) – included with most motor kits
  • Phillips screwdriver PH1 and PH2
Replace both at once

Even if only the belt snapped: while you've got the robot open, replace the motor at the same time. After the same operating time the carbon brushes are usually done for as well. It costs 3 euros more and saves you opening it up a second time in six months.

Repair step by step

Step 1: Remove the cover

Switch the robot off completely. Remove the top cover above the dust bin. Undo the screws that hold the entire white plastic lid. Lift carefully – there's a short ribbon cable that mustn't tear off.

Step 2: Expose the LIDAR unit

Under the lid sits the orange LIDAR module, fixed with four screws. Undo them, lift the module carefully, and unplug the motor's power connector.

Step 3: Replace the motor

Two small screws hold the motor in the LIDAR unit. Pull out the old motor, insert the new one. Loop the new drive belt around the motor shaft and the laser tower. Reconnect the power cable.

Step 4: Reassembly and test

Reassemble in reverse order. Place it on the charging dock and start a cleaning run. The orange tower should now spin evenly again.

Common assembly mistake

When reinserting the LIDAR unit, make sure the drive belt isn't twisted and the motor shaft sits cleanly in its guide. If the tower briefly spins after assembly but then gets stuck, the belt is usually fitted wrong.

Conclusion

Error 1 on the Xiaomi Gen 1 sounds more dramatic than it is. Swap the motor and belt, 30 minutes of work, under 10 euros in parts – and the robot runs like new again. If you don't have two left hands and own a screwdriver, you can save yourself a replacement purchase. And it's the more sustainable option anyway.
